Is your accent stopping you from getting a job?

We believe that there are many opportunities, but few of them have the ability to change your life forever and that is why we always suggest our coachees to be ready for that BIG opportunity that might happen only once. But can your accent get in the way?

According to some researchers, accents often lead to negative stereotypes, such as being considered less trustworthy, less intelligent or less pleasant to listen to. They can also face direct discrimination in the legal system and in the real estate market. In the workplace, there are reports of accented speakers facing exclusion, receiving lower salaries, being demoted in employability assessments (especially in jobs with high communication demands) and having fewer career opportunities.

On the other hand, HR representatives claim that during interviews they do not detect accents. However, they look for communication skills. A strong accent does not instantly suggest poor communication skills. However, it can become a barrier to effective conversation. Someone with a strong accent may be excluded from a certain role where communication is essential (e.g. IT-based support roles, business analyst roles, project management positions, etc.)

At You First Idiomas, we can also help you improve your accent and communication skills, so you can be prepared and confident when THAT opportunity knocks at your door... Contact us to find out more!
